Weekend Workshop with Jenni Doherty, a 2-day Painting+Mixed Media on Paper Art Program

This 2-day workshop  will be followed or preceded by a 7-day work on canvas Retreat

If you yearn to discover the freedom that working on paper can bring to your painting practice, then why not come and join us for this intensive 2-day painting program week in beautiful East Bali?

This workshop will suit both complete newcomers, as well as artists, who are not used to working on paper, whilst those of you who already enjoy this medium will learn new  approaches and techniques to invigorate and expand a fabulous new horizon of possibilities.

" The creative process is a process of surrender - not control "  — Julia Cameron

What You’ll Do

During your weekend of Working on Paper, you’ll be guided to learn about different types of papers and pigments, recognise that there are no mistakes – only happy accidents – and be guided through the layering process to create the visually complex depths that Jenni is known for mastering in her works.

ABOUT

  • Day 1 : Create 3 pieces of work using collages in a variety of papers which will then form the basis for you to ‘work into’ using the techniques Jenni will share tomorrow. These techniques have become the hallmark of Jenni’s works, and include stitchery, rubbings, mixed media printmaking, drawing, mark-making and much more

  • Day 2 :Using some of the previous day’s work, you will find a section that you love – that ‘ resonates’ with your artistic sensibility - and develop this into a larger composition on a large sheet of thick, beautiful 600gm watercolour paper, using a rich variety of mixed media and artist-quality pigments.

  • You will take home a finished work, ready to frame (the work can be rolled for transport – if you have a poster tube, please bring it, otherwise bubble wrap will be supplied)

.

Do I need to know ‘how to draw’?

No, because this retreat is suitable for all levels of experience in terms of drawing and painting.  Whilst there will no doubt be a little hesitation from those of you who might be coming to working on paper for the first time, Jenni assures you that “It will not be scary!”

She says “All of us can draw. Time with it makes us better and happier with the results”.

Those who have not drawn much will be understandably nervous, but Jenni easily brings you into drawing and being comfortable with it, almost for the moment you arrive - you’ll be amazed at the progress you make without even realising it!

Whilst for those of you who have done a lot of drawing, this time to dive deeply into drawing and layering and colouring with an artist renowned for her subtle palette and complex, multi-artworks will be joyous.

To anyone with any art experience, joining this retreat will offer precious time to consolidate, explore, play and develop your own ideas with the luxury of a professional designer-artist on hand for an entire week!

.

Should I do the workshop and the retreat?

Both are stand-alone offerings. The 2-day weekend workshop is a two-day intensive specifically about drawing and painting. The retreat will offer a natural follow-on to those who have participated in the workshop, by having time to warm up and explore in greater depth the learnings of the weekend, but it is not necessary to have done the workshop in order to join the retreat.

The 6-day retreat  will naturally involve the skills you’ve learnt in the workshop -  use of drawing, painting, understanding colours, layering, transparency, etc. – and it will then take these skills to expanded levels of complexity interns of introducing new techniques to enrich, embellish, and add visual and textural complexity to your paintings.

The retreat will also include stitchery techniques, the hallmarks of so much of Jenni’s most contemporary work, to create a small jewel-like work which will be ornamentally framed for you to take home, and you’ll also design and cut a design to print a beautiful scarf, ready to wear on retreat!

More about this workshop

You will love the progress that you make as you share a fun and laughter-filled weekend by the seaside where everything is provided – all you need to do is bring your intention.

Jenni  has presented painting workshops since 2009, and this year sees her returning to Creative Living Retreats in Bali for the third year – we are so happy to be welcoming her back with this in-depth and very richly conceived week of professional materials, techniques and inspiration with the theme of botanicals.

This is a time when Jenni steps beyond her career as a professional artist to share the fruits of a long career both as an arts educator and as a highly successful exhibiting artist. This combination is what makes the difference – Jenni comes with an incredibly abundant program to share and to ensure that you are working on your projects from the moment we all get together and that you take home completed work that makes you happy every time you look at it!
