Carrie Cox - author
Carrie Cox has been a writer for more than 30 years, both as an award-winning journalist and more recently as the author of three critically acclaimed novels, ‘Afternoons with Harvey Beam’, ‘So Many Beats of the Heart’ and ‘Storylines’.
She has also published a non-fiction book, ‘You Take The High Road and I’ll Take the Bus’, that brought together many of the humorous columns she wrote for syndicated newspapers and magazines for over a decade.
In both her non-fiction and fiction work, Carrie’s work goes to the heart of the human condition, exploring what it is that makes us think, feel and act the way we do. “I write to make sense of things; to excavate meaning and ultimately produce understanding. And more than anything else, I write to connect with people through the medium of story. It’s through stories that we remind one another we’re not alone in this world.”
Carrie is passionate about empowering people to not only tell their stories but to find their stories. She understands the process of unlocking insight, character and emotion through the wonder of words and the magic alchemy of moving through that process with others.
“Words don’t merely describe experiences and emotions – they find them. They shape them and can ultimately change them. That is the immense power and pleasure of writing, whether it be for an audience or for ourselves. Nothing else in my life has delivered me what writing has and I love sharing in its wonder with others.”
Carrie delivers annual workshops to the ‘Art of Writing’ retreat in Florence, with a particular focus on the development of character and the relationship between plot and theme. She runs classes on storytelling and ideas development at schools and writing festivals and has taught and mentored hundreds of journalism students, academics and emerging writers of both fiction and non-fiction.
Carrie has been an invited resident at the Tyrone Guthrie Art Centre in Ireland, the Varuna Writers’ Centre in the Blue Mountains and the Katharine Susannah Prichard Writers Centre in Perth, Western Australia.
“I can’t wait to meet the participants at Anna Kwiecinska’s Bali writing retreat in June 2026. Together we will explore and deepen our writing craft, connecting through the medium of words and the limitless power of creativity.
In one of the most beautiful and inspiring settings imaginable, stories new and old will reveal themselves.”
