JUNE  Sat.12  and  Sun 13 - workshop

JUNE  Tue 15 - Mon 21 - retreat (departure day )

Always wanted to know how to create those marvellously layered artworks on paper that looks so rich once they’re behind glass in a frame on your wall?

Why not join Jenni for this gorgeously indulgent week to take ideas from the bounteous abundance of Nature which surrounds us at Villa Nilaya and the beautiful locations to which we journey for drawing inspiration, and turn them into elegant and exciting works on paper?

The World always seems brighter when you’ve just made something that wasn’t there before  —  Neil Gaiman

Who will this retreat suit and do I need to know ‘how to draw’?

This retreat is suitable for all levels of experience both in terms of drawing and painting.  Whilst there will no doubt be a little hesitation from those of you who might be coming to working on paper for the first time, Jenni assures you that “It will not be scary!” She says “All of us can draw. Time with it makes us better and happier with the results”.

Those who have not drawn much will be understandably nervous, but Jenni easily brings you into drawing and being comfortable with it, almost for the moment you arrive  - you’ll be amazed at the progress you make without even realising it!

Whilst for those of you who have done a lot of drawing, this time to dive deeply into drawing and layering and colouring with an artist renowned for her subtle palette and   complex, multi-artworks will be joyous.

To anyone with any art experience, joining this retreat will offer precious time to consolidate, explore, play and develop your own ideas with the luxury of a professional designer/artist on hand for an entire week!

Should I do the workshop and the retreat ?

Both are stand-alone offerings. The retreat will offer a natural follow-on to those who have participated in the workshop, by having a time to warm up and explore in greater depth the learnings of the weekend, but it is not necessary to have done the workshop in order to join the retreat.

The 2-day weekend workshop is a two-day intensive specifically about drawing and painting. This 6-day retreat  will naturally involve the skills you’ve learnt in the workshop -  use of drawing, painting, understanding colours, layering, transparency, etc. – and it will then take these skills to expanded levels of complexity interns of introducing new techniques to enrich, embellish, and add visual and textural complexity to your paintings.

The retreat will also include stitchery techniques, the hallmarks of so much of Jenni’s most contemporary work, to create a small jewel-like work which will be ornamentally framed for you to take home , and you’ll also design and cut a  design to print a beautiful scarf to wear on retreat.

What You’ll Do

With expert guidance, from Jenni Doherty, an experienced and acclaimed artist, you’ll complete these projects to take home:

  • A small, handmade book where you will have created a compendium of ‘marks’ which will be a treasure trove to refer to as you go forward in your work, as well as a unique and evocative journal of your retreat week.

  •  Design a lino block design and carve the block, which is yours to use throughout this retreat and take home

  •  A silk scarf printed with your own lino block

  • 3 large, full sheet pieces of work on the best quality of beautiful hot and cold-pressed  600gm papers to take home and frame.

  • A small, ornamentally framed work which will be embellished with stitch details

More about this retreat

Jenni  has presented  painting workshops since 2009, and this year sees her returning to Creative Living Retreats in Bali for the third year – we are so happy to be welcoming her back with this in-depth and very richly conceived week of professional materials, techniques and inspiration with the theme of botanicals.

This is a time when Jenni steps beyond her career as a professional artist to share the fruits of a long career both as an arts educator and as a highly successful exhibiting artist. This combination is what makes the difference – Jenni comes with an incredibly abundant program to share and to ensure that you are working on your projects from the moment we all get together and that you take home completed work that makes you happy every time you look at it!

You will love the progress that you make as you share a fun and laughter-filled days by the seaside where everything is provided – all you need to do is bring your intention.

During your week of Botanical Bounty

You’ll be inspired by the beautiful tropical environment, rich with nature, with plenty of places to take timeout and swim, in the sea or the pool, whilst enjoying the hospitality of Villa Nilaya ‘s wonderful staff who’ll prepare delicious lunches for you each day. There’s even a Balinese massage, a cultural visit into the far eastern part of the island included on your retreat, and an option to go boating.

A foundational element of Creative Living Retreats, and something which really makes them unique, is the importance we place on yoga and meditation throughout the week. The morning ritual of gentle stretch and meditation to focus your mind  prepares you to really lean into your creativity each and every day of the retreat. Experience the peacefulness of not having to ‘be’ anything to ‘anyone’ this week and open yourself to being cared for. And at the end of the day, a longer session with deep rest - shavasana - always awaits.

You’ll leave with not only a toolkit of techniques that will inspire and inform your painting, but you’ll definitely be taking home 3 full-sheet, finished artworks ready for the framers, a small framed work and a scarf that you’ve printed yourself.

You’ll make new friends, and perhaps, you’ll find some new or renewed practices to take home into your daily life for the well-being of yourself and others.

What have other retreat participants said about Jenni’s courses?

“Thoroughly enjoyed the workshop - I learnt a lot and will translate all that into my art over the coming months.  I particularly enjoyed Jenni’s two days.  Her work is quite wonderful.”  Beverley Chubb UK

“Loved the whole thing. Food was amazing and plenty of variety. Staff amazing ... I just thought you did the retreat so well. I felt totally satisfied with the way you made it all happen and made us all feel very special. You really were the glue. Very professional

Exhibition was just so beautifully put together”.  Lyn Mowday, Australia
